The theory of competitive advantage of Michael Porter in the context of international sports mega-events is described. Competitive advantages are provided with the help of four major determinants: factor condition; demand conditions; firm strategy, structure and rivalry; related and supporting industries. These factors interact with each other with the aim to create conditions in which competition occurs. The competitive advantages of hosting the Olympic Games, World Cup and European Championship in eight countries are exposed. Preferences of socio-economic nature (infrastructure, financial resources, international impact, safety, ratings on television, the entertainment industry, the competition for the right to broadcasting) and non-economic benefits (political sentiments, lobbying, restoration the importance of sport) are revealed.
